A marvellous place of worship, Sagrada Familia is a Roman catholic church located in Barcelona which was designed by an architect named Antoni Gaudi. It was in the year 1883 that he started work on the project and continued working on it for 43 long years till his death in the year 1926. Considered as one of the greatest architects in Barcelona, Antoni Gaudi was buried in the crypt of Sagrada Familia. The temple of worship still continues to be constructed and inspite of being incomplete, it is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The construction of Sagrada Familia had started with very slow progress owing to private donations and during the process it also went through a hiatus due to the Spanish Civil War. The work on the church again commenced in the year 1950 and since then it has been continuing in full swing with expected completion in the year 2026. Art critics and historians clearly states the fact that Sagrada Familia is one of history’s most extraordinary interpretations of gothic art and architecture.
When Gaudi was involved in the construction of the church, his prime idea was to construct a form of art based on Gothic and Byzantine cathedrals. He took it as a challenge to express and communicate the message of the Evangelists through the architectural textures and composition of the church. The construction that has been completed till date covers the Christian symbolism via every architectural sculpting. One will find 18 towers within the premises with every tower having its own significance. The tower in the middle represents Jesus, four representing the Gospels, another one Virgin Mother Mary and the remaining 12 towers being the Apostles. The 18 towers have been designed and constructed in such a manner that when completed this will provide for an extraordinary sight of stupefaction bound to leave people speechless. The vertical design of the building is meant to symbolise the levitation of humans towards God. The birth, the passion and the death and resurrection of Christ has been very wonderfully represented by the three facades in the church.
Antoni Gaudi has successfully been able to achieve the purpose with which he had started on this lavish project on Sagrada Familia. With his unique architectonic language, Gaudi has achieved the fame and name, no architect has been able to achieve till date and his revolutionary designs continue to be worked upon a century after his earthly demise. With hopes of completion of this magnificent piece of architecture soon enough, history is being waited to be made the day when Sagrada Familia is completed for the world to witness.
